This article explores Bernard Herrmann’s legacy in John Williams’s score for The Fury (1978), directed by Brian De Palma. It highlights Herrmann’s aesthetic and technical influence, which Williams explicitly acknowledges, primarily through repetitive motifs, orchestration techniques, and strong harmonic tension. The study underscores the relationship between Herrmann and Williams, as well as De Palma’s role as a mediator between the two composers, having himself worked with Herrmann on Sisters and Obsession, films marked by Hitchcockian production. A detailed musical analysis reveals how Williams assimilates Herrmann’s techniques while asserting his own distinctive style. More than a mere homage, The Fury’s score is embedded within a historical continuity of Hollywood symphonism, demonstrating the permeability between tradition and innovation in 1970s film music.
