Creative translating from novel2film in a bilingual environment

Brigitte Gauthier

Abstract

We are developing a field of research entitled: “From Novel2Film in a bilingual environment”. We are exploring the issues of the translation of silence, specifically in Drama from one cultural context to another. Harold Pinter’s silences are a very potent example of this issue. He’s well known for having created a great deal of tension within the pauses in his plays. He displays power games revolving not only on the words but also on the dizziness provoked by silences. We will focus also on the necessity of being in tune with one’s own body while translating in order to control the impact on the reader as the psychological and physiological state of the translator has consequences on the quality of the work, which is very rarely taken into consideration. We will then discuss the specificities of adaptation to a film medium.
